Assistant Research Scientist (Microbiology)

Job Description

Required is a driven, organised and proactive individual to join us as an Assistant Research Scientist in the microbiology team. This position will focus on growing, archiving and sequencing therapeutic bacteria, in a state-of-the-art microbial culturing facility. The successful candidate should have experience as a research assistant in a microbiology, molecular biology or genomics laboratory, and experience of core microbiology and genomics techniques, including; microbial culturing and characterisation, nucleic acid isolation and PCR.

Reporting to the Head of Microbiology, the successful candidate will work with colleagues in building the company’s key microbiological and genomics resources. The successful candidate will join the team, based near Cambridge, UK, and will receive a competitive company benefits package.

Key duties will include:

  • Isolation of gut bacteria
  • Genomic DNA extraction
  • Metagenomic DNA extraction
  • Preparation of samples for NGS sequencing
  • PCR
  • Maintenance of electronic records
  • Accurate and timely record keeping

Candidate Specifications:

Essential requirements for this post include:


  • A degree in a Biological Sciences subject, or equivalent relevant research experience
  • Experience as a research assistant in a microbiology or molecular biology laboratory
  • Experience of microbial culturing
  • Experience of core molecular biology and genomics techniques including nucleic
  • acid extraction and PCR


  • Accurate record keeping with great attention to detail
  • Proven ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • A high level of motivation and desire to learn
  • Willingness to contribute flexibly to a new company as required, to help it succeed
  • Proactivity in solving problems and responding enthusiastically to challenges
  • Excellent organisational skills and work ethic
  • A demonstrable ability to manage numerous priorities simultaneously and to meet agreed deadlines
  • Effective team player, with an ability to work independently and deliver projects to timescale and budget
  • Proficient use of Microsoft office suite programs, including Excel and PowerPoint
  • A high level of English language competency, including excellent written and oral

Desirable requirements for this post include:

  • An understanding of microbial biology, genetics, gastrointestinal microbiota and sequencing technologies
  • Familiarity with handling perishable, human-derived materials
